Whenever I sing, I hesitate for a bit. Most of the time I feel like I don’t deserve to witness such beauty. Kind of weird, right? Perhaps it’s because I always think every piece of music has more stories in it than one might think.
It tells the story written through its lyrics, that’s one. It holds the story of the composer, the arranger, the time and place it was composed, the singers, and the listeners. And when it’s sung, what is happening at the moment that the musician has chosen to perform this particular piece.
What happens when you make music? You tell more stories than you think.
The Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club (ACGC) hosts a yearly choral competition called Blue Harmonies for vocal groups inside the Ateneo. This year, Blue Harmonies is named ‘Siklab: A Pathway to Light’. Since this country’s decision to take quite a risky path, this is the ACGC and their community’s way of telling us that music is truly capable of sparking action.
Six groups competed for a spot in the Blue Harmonies Top 3 (yep, just like Miss Universe). And a portion of their cash prize will be given to the beneficiary organizations they have partnered with.
Groups who participated were people brought together by their love for music, and people who were so brave to add to the stories of the songs they chose to sing.
