Very few queues so long that they beat the line to an 8AM M.R.T. train ride. For me, it’s my “to-watch” list. There are only so many films I can physically watch, and there is always frustration when I look at how harrowingly long it has grown, the films I’m yet to see and probably will never be able to.
But I digress. The first quarter of the year has slipped us by, leaving a number of great films such as Gore Verbinki’s A Cure For Wellness, indeed one of the strangest Hollywood films I’ve seen in a Philippine theater. There’s also M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, and Oz Perkin’s The Blackcoat’s Daughter—all admirable genre efforts that we’re right by calling modern classics.
J.P. Habac’s dramedy I’m Drunk, I Love You, along with its double-featured short, Jerrold Tarog’s “Angelito”, is the first Filipino feature whose price for admission is way less than the value I’m getting. A couple of re-releases, including Petersen Vargas’ 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten and Ice Idanan’s Baka Sakaling Makarating make a promising trend for lesser-known films. A big reason why I’m especially excited to see how our film festivals this year will turn out.
The rest of the year is promising, too, with films like Denis Villenueve’s Blade Runner 2049 and David Lowery’s A Ghost Story just waiting for the world to see them. There’s also Citizen Jake, starring Atom Araulio, the comeback film of one of the best directors we have, Mike De Leon. As you can probably tell, I’m excited. Very.
