The Fate of the Furious is only third of the last Fast & Furious before the films bid their final goodbye, but Universal already trying to plow new land.
Apparently, a spinoff movie top-billed both by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham could go under development soon. In fact, it has been in the studio’s consideration for quite some time now. Even though the two filmed a post-credits scene for Furious 7, it was cut, according to The Wrap, because the idea of a spinoff didn’t sit very well with Vin Diesel.
The idea of a spinoff, though, makes sense. Johnson and Statham have incredible chemistry together and can potentially yield an interesting dynamic. Universal tested the aforementioned post-credits scene just to test the waters, and it went so well, I guess, that the interest to do a spinoff movie was only reinforced. Coupled with the huge box office success of The Fate of the Furious, there was no other way to look.
Mind you, is not a confirmation. Universal has yet to make an official announcement whether it is pushing through or not. The former, however, is more likely.
The next two films in the franchise are obviously still a go, but there is some room writers can play around with. One of the bigger arcs involving Statham’s character Deckard Shaw, is Han’s death. This is one thing the spinoff can shed some light on, because to have Diesel’s character partaking in a mission with the one responsible for his “brother’s” death is, well, inconsistent. Otherwise, every speech about “being a family” Diesel’s Toretto makes would be nothing if not a bunch of motivational bullshit.
