Outlast 2 is a first-person survival horror video game developed and published by Red Barrels. It is the sequel to the 2013 video game Outlast, and features a journalist named Blake Langermann, along with his wife Lynn, roaming the Arizona desert to explore the murder of a pregnant woman, Jane Doe. Unfortunately, Blake and Lynn get separated in a helicopter crash, and Blake has to find his wife while traveling through a village inhabited by a sect that believes the end of days is upon them.
Persona 5 is a role-playing video game developed by Atlus for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 video game consoles. Persona 5 is chronologically the sixth installment in the Persona series, which is part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. Published by Atlus in Japan and North America and by Deep Silver in Europe and Australia, the game was released first in Japan in September 2016, and worldwide in April 2017. In Western regions, Persona 5 was the first main game in the series since Persona 2: Eternal Punishment to omit the Shin Megami Tensei moniker.
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate
Syndicate is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. It was released on October 23, 2015, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on November 19, 2015, for Microsoft Windows. It is the ninth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, and the successor to 2014’s Assassin’s Creed Unity.
The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with liberty, and the Templars, who desire peace through order. The story is set in Victorian era London and follows twin assassins Jacob and Evie Frye as they navigate the corridors of organized crime, and take back the city from Templar control. The open world design lets players freely roam London.
Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7 is a survival horror video game developed and published by Capcom. The game was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in January 2017, the latter featuring support for the PlayStation VR headset. It is the eleventh main entry and 24th entry overall in the Resident Evil franchise. It is the first main series installment to be played from a first-person perspective.
The story follows Ethan Winters as he searches for his wife Mia, which leads him to a derelict plantation inhabited by the Baker family. Ethan makes use of weapons and tools in the fight against the Baker family and creatures known as the “Molded”. Healing items are used in the event of injury and there are puzzles that may be solved to further the story. Instead of being action-oriented, the survival horror element present in earlier installments took priority. Thus, the game uses a first-person perspective. It is the first commercially released game developed in the RE Engine.
Dishonored 2 is an action-adventure stealth video game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The sequel to 2012’s Dishonored, the game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 11, 2016.
The series takes place in the fictional Empire of the Isles, with the majority of Dishonored 2 set in the coastal city of Karnaca. After Empress Emily Kaldwin is deposed by an “otherworldly usurper”, the player may choose between playing as either Emily or her Royal Protector and father Corvo Attano as they attempt to reclaim the throne. Both Emily and Corvo employ their own array of supernatural abilities. They can alternatively decide to forfeit them altogether. There are a multitude of ways to succeed in each given mission, from stealth to purposeful violent conflict.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is an action-adventure video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 video game console. The game was released worldwide on May 10, 2016.
A Thief’s End follows series protagonist Nathan Drake (portrayed by Nolan North), who has retired from fortune hunting several years after the events of Drake’s Deception. He reunites with his estranged older brother Sam and longtime partner Sully to search for clues to the location of Captain Henry Avery’s long-lost treasure to save his brother. Compared to previous installments in the series, the game’s story campaign features significantly larger and more open-designed levels to allow players more freedom to explore and move about in combat situations, progress through enemy patrols undetected using stealth, and operate vehicles to openly navigate around some sections of the campaign.
Dark Souls III
Dark Souls III is an action role-playing video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The fourth entry in the Souls series, Dark Souls III was released in Japan in March 2016, and worldwide in April 2016.
Dark Souls III was critically and commercially successful, with critics calling it a worthy and fitting conclusion to the series. The game became Bandai Namco’s fastest selling game in their history, selling over three million copies worldwide two months after release. A complete version containing the base game and both downloadable content expansions, titled Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades, was released in April 2017.
Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy XV is an open world action role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One home consoles. The game is the fifteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, and was released worldwide on November 29, 2016. The game features an open-world environment and action-based battle system similar to the Kingdom Hearts series, incorporating the ability to switch weapons and other elements such as vehicle travel and camping.
Final Fantasy XV takes place on the fictional world of Eos. All the world’s countries, bar the kingdom of Lucis, are under the dominion of the empire of Niflheim. Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the Lucian throne, goes on a quest to retake his homeland and its magical Crystal after it is seized by Niflheim on the eve of peace negotiations between the two nations. However, he soon discovers that the Crystal is at the heart of a much greater threat to Eos, and that his role as the future king is key to averting an apocalyptic event from taking place. The game shares a thematic connection with Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy, a subseries of games linked by a common mythos which includes Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world action role-playing video game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game was released worldwide in 2017.
The plot revolves around Aloy, a hunter and archer living in a world overrun by robots. Having been an outcast her whole life, she sets out to discover the dangers that kept her sheltered. The character uses ranged and melee weapons and stealth tactics to combat the mechanised creatures, whose remains can also be looted for resources. A skill tree facilitates gameplay improvements. The game features an open world environment for Aloy to explore, divided into tribes that hold side quests to undertake, while the main story guides her throughout the whole world.
The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3 is an action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt and published by CD Projekt RED. Announced in February 2013, it was released worldwide on 19 May 2015 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is the third in the series, preceded by The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which are based on the series of fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
Played in an open world third-person perspective, players control protagonist Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a witcher, who seeks to find his adopted daughter on the run from the “Wild Hunt”, an otherworldly force determined to capture and utilize her powers. Throughout the game, players battle against the world’s many dangers using weapons and magic, interact with various non-player characters, and complete main story quests, side quests, bounty contracts, and treasure hunts to acquire experience points and gold used to increase Geralt’s various abilities and equipment. The game’s central story features multiple endings that are determined by Geralt’s choices made by the player during certain points of the story.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its release, with praise directed toward its gameplay, narrative, world design, combat and visuals.
