PhilSTAR’s Ricky Lo is pretty sure that Liza Soberano (of the LizQuen phenom, starring in movies such as Everyday I Love You and Just The Way You Are) has been tapped to play Darna in a same-name film directed by Erik Matti.
Angel Locsin was obviously the filmmaker’s first-choice and this writer’s (although I doubt if that has any weight whatsoever), but due to health issues, Locsin has ultimately passed on the role. Soberano is included in the list of actresses—Nadine Lustre, Sarah Geronimo, Pia Wurtzbach, and more—who fans thought would do the role justice.
Darna, of course, is an important film. Apart from it potentially putting to the fore comic book-to-movie adaptations in the Philippines, the film will also tackle modern issues about womanhood. In an interview, Matti told Spot.ph that the actor who will play Darna must epitomize the notion of a “21st-century woman”.
Both Matti and the folks at Star Cinema has yet to confirm if Soberano is who will fill this role. What do you guys think, though? Does Soberano have the ability to carry a film as gargantuan and a role as iconic as Darna? Let us know in the comments below!
