Choosing the products that go in your starter makeup kit is the hardest thing ever. I should get products that are worth it. I should get the perfect foundation right away. Just let go! Makeup mistakes are inevitable anyway.
Fear not though! So you won’t make drastic mistakes, here’s a short guide on what you should buy for your first makeup kit!
Eyebrow pencil with a spoolie
If I could have only one product on my face for the whole day, it would be my brows. At first, I thought very little of them until I realized they are what makes your face more defined. For people will full brows, just make sure to clean them up and keep them neat.
I would recommend the Etude House Drawing Eyebrow pencil and spoolie. They come in seven shades officially, so choose one that is closest to your current hair color. If you haven’t dyed your hair ever, I would recommend shades #1 and #2 for my fellow Filipinos.
Etude House Drawing Eye Brow – P178.00
The Etude House Drawing Eye Brow is a double-ended product – one end for an angled pencil and the other end for the spoolie. I love the angled end because it’s perfect for defining the shape of your brows and at you can use its wider side to fill it in.
Using only the pencil may result to brows that are too dark or too thick. After filling in your brows, brush and blend it out with the spoolie so the edges don’t turn out too harsh. Plus, you’ll get rid of those pesky pencil streaks.
Brush-tip Liquid Eyeliner
This is something no one in the world will recommend a starter to use. To master it, you need a ton of YouTube tutorials and lots and lots of patience. Trust me, it took me almost a year.
For me though, there is no other product that can give you an opaque, defined liner with a sharp wing in one stroke. And if you use the right product, it won’t smudge.
Maybelline HyperSharp Liner – P379.00
Usually I recommend the K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner, but it’s a bit expensive. Since you’re just starting, try the Maybelline HyperSharp Liner. It’s one of the best drugstore brush-tip liners I’ve found in the market – very opaque and relatively easy to use. Brush-tip liners are better for learning since it responds to the weight your hand puts upon application. Felt-tip liquid liners dry more easily too.
I lived 5 years of my makeup life without eyeshadow primer because I didn’t know what it was yet I kept complaining why I had to retouch my eyeshadow every hour.
Okay, so here’s the thing. Dry powdered eyeshadow will never stick on your eyelids. Believe it or not, your eyelids do sweat. They also secrete oils that will mess up whatever it is on your eyelids. In humid Manila, your primer will act as an adhesive and a great base for your eyeshadow AND liner. Do the world a favor and put on eyeshadow primer.
Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer – P298.00
Here’s the Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer. I’ve been using it for a long while now and I do strongly recommend it.
I’ve used it during work and even when I used to perform on stage, and it does do its job well. Imagine 3 hours in front of a burning spotlight. You’d sweat like crazy! But this primer really helped my eyeshadow stay on until the end of the show.
Experiment with depth and highlight with a simple eyeshadow palette. You can even use these colors for face highlight and contour.
This eyeshadow palette is perfect for beginners because it already suggests the places you should put each eyeshadow. Use the bottom color all over your lids to start. Build your gradient using the middle color, with more product on the outer corners of your eyes then slowly blending it towards the center. Highlight the inner corners and browbone with the top color.
Experiment with these colors by maybe placing the crease shade all over your lids then blend it upwards using the bottom color. Do a cut crease, smokey eye, and daytime and nighttime looks using only this trio.
The thing about red lipstick is that it can be both a red and a pink lip, as well as a light blush.
Swipe it on for a full red lip, and tap it lightly on both the lips and the cheeks for that natural pink flush.
Make sure to know if you are warm-toned (gold accessories complement you), cool-toned (silver accessories), or neutral-toned (both silver and gold accessories) so the shade of red you get complements you best.
Orange-reds for warm tones, blue/purple-reds for cool tones, and any red color for neutral tones.
I don’t usually recommend foundation for a beginner’s makeup kit. A lot of people I know have stopped using foundation for everyday makeup and instead just using it for events and night time looks (I know I do). Besides, choosing the right foundation for you is a tricky and detailed one so I’ll save that for another post 🙂
