James Gunn didn’t want to keep it from the fans. On an earnest Facebook post, the Guardians of the Galaxy director shared that a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie is in the works, and he’s at the helm.
“So, after many months of ruminations and discussions, I know the answer. I could save this answer for the first, random interviewer to ask me during the press junket but instead I thought I’d share it with the most important people in the Guardiansverse – you, the fans, who have been so incredibly supportive and enthusiastic over the past five years, it has moved me to tears on a regular basis,” he wrote. “So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
Here’s Gunn’s post, in full:
Make what you will of that statement—the current iteration of the Guardians ending, all the possibile roads Marvel could take from here, and what other have yous—but how interactive Gunn is with his fans is admirable. If there’s an instance where the director actively avoids separation from his audience, it’s fan-driven stories like that of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Dave Bautista are all expected to return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with Kevin Feige on board as producer. We obviously hasn’t a dang clue as to what stories the Guardians threequel will tell, and Disney hasn’t released an official target date for the film, but looking at the current churn out rate of it and Marvel Studios, we might get the third volume in 2020 or earlier.
This piles up on the good things that have been happening for the franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently the best-tested Marvel movie so far, with a huge expected turnout of at least $150 million on the opening weekend alone.
